Water management is core to making GM’s global operations more efficient. It includes working towards the goal of reducing water intensity by 15 percent by 2020, from a 2010 baseline. It also includes improving supply chain engagement in water use globally.

In the recent study by CDP, the non-profit global environmental disclosure platform, GM was awarded a position on the Supplier Water A List, in recognition of its actions to address environmental issues.

At GM’s request, more than 170 of its suppliers disclosed their water use to CDP in 2017, identifying some inherent water related risks and how they embed water security into their business strategies.

“Collaboration with suppliers is key to integrating water stewardship throughout the supply chain,” said Al Hildreth, GM global energy manager. “Best practice sharing, robust water discloser and engagement through education can help avoid or mitigate major water risks.”

100 companies appear on the A List, produced at the request of 99 CDP supply chain purchasing member organizations with a combined annual spend of over $3 trillion. GM is among the 2% of organizations to be awarded the designation.

Paul Simpson, CEO of CDP said, “Environmental action has never been more vital, nor urgent, and companies have a crucial role to play in keeping up the momentum needed to meet the aims of the Paris Agreement.”
