Happy Earth Day!

This year, the theme of our celebration is “Global Goals, Local Action,” in recognition of the international climate agreement that was reached in December 2015 in Paris, and which we hope will be signed into force by world leaders in New York City today.

Our theme also highlights our own global greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal to reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from our global operations by 30 percent, compared to a 2014 baseline, by 2025. This goal is an important component of our 2030 Sustainability Vision, which you can learn more about in the 2015 Qualcomm Sustainability Report.

As a company of inventors and engineers who are working to develop innovative solutions to the most pressing global challenge we face today, Qualcomm is committed to working to address the seriousness of climate change to ensure a safe and sustainable world for future generations.

Today we’ll be celebrating Earth Day around the globe in a number of ways:

  • At our headquarters in San Diego, we will have approximately 40 employee and community booths on the main campus lawn, as well as an LED lighting sale, electric vehicle test drives, employee personal e-waste recycling, food and more. Our Santa Clara and Boulder offices also have Earth Day festivities planned.
  • Several of our China offices will be celebrating by joining forces to paint a picture of a healthy Earth.
  • Our Taiwan offices will have energy-saving seminars for employees and will turn off the office lights for an hour during lunchtime to participate in “Earth Hour Taiwan.” Employees will also receive seeds, soil and pots to grow their own plants for their offices.

We are also excited to announce that we are kicking off an employee engagement campaign around greenhouse gas emissions and inviting members of the community to join us!

The “CO2 + U QChallenge” will run throughout the month of May and challenges participants to complete daily tasks that will help them understand and help reduce their carbon footprints. Step one? Learn about carbon footprints, of course.

Daily activities include eating vegetarian for a day, forgoing plastic bags for a day and mapping alternate transportation options for their errands or commutes. For each employee who participates, Qualcomm will donate $10 to a global environmentally-focused non-profit organization.
