Las Vegas Casinos To Go Dark For Earth Hour 2014

Las Vegas is known for 24-hour gambling, Elvis impersonators on every street corner and lots and lots of lights. The Strip features numerous marquees and bright lights that can be seen for miles. The Luxor's beam of light can even be seen from space. So, what does it take for these lights to take a break?

Earth Hour! Taking place around the world, Earth Hour draws attention to environmental issues. Created in 2007 and organized by the WWF (World Wide Fund for nature, not the fake pro wrestlers), the annual event encourages businesses and individuals to turn off non-essential lights for one hour as a commitment to the planet.

Many Las Vegas casinos and other properties will participate in Earth Hour, which will be observed Saturday, March 29 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in Las Vegas.

Venetian|Palazzo will shut off non-essential lighting to mark the event and is challenging its team members to do the same at home.

Boyd Gaming will also turn off non-essential exterior and marquee lighting at its Las Vegas properties including The Orleans, Sam’s Town, Suncoast and Gold Coast. During Earth Hour, the video screen on each marquee will display the Earth Hour logo.

MGM Resorts will dim the lights at properties here in Las Vegas and at its Beau Rivage resort in Biloxi, Mississippi. Exterior lighting, rooftop signage, marquees and front features will be turned off to promote energy conservation.

Caesars Entertainment properties will turn off all non-essential exterior lights and encourage guests and employees to turn off interior lighting during Earth Hour as well. The large LED screens at The Linq will go dark and the High Roller observation wheel will be a bright blue during the day to promote awareness, before going dark for the hour as well.

The newly opened Sprinkles Cupcakes at The Linq is getting in on the Earth Hour action as well by turning off all of its façade lights and most of its interior lights. The tasty bakery will also offerblackout cupcakes, which are dipped in ganache, and free hot fudge toppings on ice cream all day.
