Mars Chocolate North America Topeka Site Awarded "2015 Plant Of The Year"

Food Engineering magazine says Topeka site is “lean, green and poised for growth”

TOPEKA, Kan., April 15, 2015 /3BL Media/ – Food Engineering Magazine has named Mars Chocolate North America’s Topeka factory as “2015 Plant of the Year,” noting its just-in-time manufacturing, excellence in food safety innovation, clean design technology, emphasis on lean manufacturing and LEED Gold certification.

The 500,000-sq-ft., $270 million plant was designed using best practices from plants across Europe, Russia, China and other regions. Mars Associates collaborated with the design and construction teams from CRB Consulting Engineers and McCarthy Building Companies to ensure the Topeka facility was designed with Associates in mind, including a full-service cafeteria, centralized maintenance department, workout room and an open office space, which encourages communication and keeps people talking, discussing ideas and solving problems.

The site’s Gold LEED Certificate is evidence of Mars’ commitment to a sustainable operation and its ‘Sustainable in a Generation’ initiative. Within the Gold LEED certification, the plant excelled in include sustainable site, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, innovation and regional priority.
