MetLife Recognized for Leadership on Environmental Issues

NEW YORK, October 28, 2016 /3BL Media/ – MetLife (MET: NYSE) announced today that is has been recognized by CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project) for leadership in reporting and management of climate change issues. CDP, a not-for-profit that assesses the work of more than 5,000 companies worldwide on environmental performance, gave MetLife an A minus, placing the company in the “Leadership” category. Companies in this category scored 75% or higher on disclosure, awareness, and management of environmental issues, they also earn additional points for other actions they have taken.  

“MetLife has a long history of managing its business responsibly, and we are proud of this recognition for our environmental stewardship efforts,” said John Hele, MetLife’s chief financial officer.

CDP scores are based upon a company’s disclosure practices and management of climate change risks. The CDP global disclosure system helps companies measure and manage their environmental impact. CDP’s data management system is used by investors, purchasing managers and policy makers around the world to better understand environmental performance.

MetLife’s recognition from CDP follows other notable environmental achievements this year:

  • MetLife’s Global Technology Campus in Cary, N.C., recently earned the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification, the highest level of distinction awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council. The Cary facility is the 19th MetLife office to be LEED certified globally and the 6th to earn the prestigious Platinum designation
  • In September, the company was named to the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Index, recognized as the gold standard for corporate sustainability and the first global index to track the leading sustainability-driven companies. 
  • In June, MetLife was named the “greenest” insurer in the world on Newsweek’s 2016 “Green Business Rankings.”
  • In March, the company received the prestigious “2016 Climate Leadership Award” from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for bold greenhouse-gas reduction goals.
