You cannot easily miss the arrival of Michael Bloom-berg, founder of the great empire of financial services, tech-assisted trading and business news and former mayor of New York, in a stint as “King Mike” that lasted from 2001 till 2014. His estimated fortune is $49 billion — with a mighty philanthropic arm that dishes out funds to combat climate change and support innovation in education, health and city governance.

The “man called Mike” arrives in a throng of communications advisers, whom he jovially shoos away as they fret about his imminent book launch. 

We’re on the rooftop of The Ned, overlooking the £1 billion new Bloomberg building, designed by Norman Foster, a long, low structure — no vulgar steel and glass skyscraper and a contrast to his blingy New York HQ — with a lustrous dark bronze roof and cantilevered internal ramp, up and down which the staff walk, like extras in Star Trek.
