Points of Light to Commemorate Sept. 11 with Volunteer Service During Multigenerational Event at the Washington Monument
WASHINGTON, D.C., September 8, 2015 /3BL Media/ – On the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance, Points of Light – the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service – will host a multigenerational event on the grounds of the Washington Monument, bringing together veterans and school children to benefit children of military families.
Sept. 11 was designated a National Day of Service and Remembrance by the 2009 Kennedy Serve America Act. The Corporation for National and Community Service leads the annual event, working with MyGoodDeed and hundreds of nonprofit groups, faith-based organizations, and schools and businesses nationwide.
WHO:
War veterans, public school students from Prince George’s County, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., and community volunteers. Veterans will include; Staff Sgt. Maggie Sexton, who will tell the children about her experience as a woman in the Marines, including three combat deployments in Iraq; U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Marten D. Wallace Sr., who will discuss the sacrifices of those in the armed forces and their families; and Navy Capt. Wayne Chesley, who will talk about the challenges of serving on a submarine during the Cold War.
WHAT:
Generational Ties – War veterans will tell their stories of service to 75 students. Working with volunteers, the students will document the stories to create books that will be given as gifts to the children of military families – young people who often face particular struggles as a result of having parents deployed overseas. The handmade books will serve as reminders of the strength and resilience of the men and women in the armed forces.
