October 23, 2014 /3BL Media/ - This week Microsoft published its 2014 Citizenship Report and an accompanying Global Reporting Initiative G4 Index. The report details the progress Microsoft is making serving communities, such as Microsoft YouthSpark, a company-wide initiative to create opportunities for 300 million youth through technology, training and experiences. It also covers the company’s commitments to ethical business conduct and governance, its people, human rights, responsible sourcing, and environmental sustainability. The report is published in conjunction with Microsoft’s annual report to reflect the core belief that the company’s citizenship commitments and actions contribute long-term value to society and to its business.

A few highlights from the Microsoft 2014 Citizenship Report include:

  • Discussion of new steps to meet Microsoft’s longstanding commitment to ensuring the privacy and security of customers’ data, including expanding use of encryption across its services, providing choice and transparency on data location, and strengthening legal protections for customers’ privacy.
  • Details of the implementation of Microsoft’s carbon neutrality program and internal carbon fee, including expanded investments in renewable energy with the purchase of more than three billion kilowatt hours of green power, equal to 100 percent of the company’s global electricity use.
  • Reporting on work to help nonprofits do more good with technology by donating software and hardware to more than 86,000 nonprofits around the globe.
