ST. LOUIS, June 11, 2015 /3BL Media/ – Sigma-Aldrich Corporation (Nasdaq: SIAL) was named in the top five in Newsweek’s 2015 Green Rankings, one of the world’s most recognized assessments of corporate environmental performance. In its fourth appearance on the list, Sigma-Aldrich maintained its number five ranking among the U.S. 500, which consists of the 500 largest publicly traded companies headquartered in the U.S. by market capitalization.  The recognition once again places the St. Louis-based life science company in the top one percent for environmental performance.

“We are honored to be recognized by Newsweek,” said Rakesh Sachdev, President and CEO.  “At Sigma-Aldrich, we seek to ensure sustainability in all facets of our business. This starts with procurement and our continued evaluation and usage of green chemistry, moving through production and across our supply chain to achieve our goal of providing our life sciences customers with a wide range of products to conduct their research and manufacturing in a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible manner. Our continued appearance on this highly reputable list of companies is a direct result of these efforts.”

The 2015 Green Rankings assess the environmental performance of the U.S. 500.  Companies are measured against their industry peers using eight clearly defined metrics including energy, water and waste usage as well as corporate reputation.  At number five on the nationwide list, Sigma-Aldrich was one of the highest-ranking companies among its peer group.

“Sigma-Aldrich has placed a strong emphasis on developing and implementing programs intended to reduce our own environmental impact over the past five years. In 2014, for the second consecutive year, we saw a reduction in our absolute electricity usage and we achieved a significant reduction in our absolute carbon footprint,” said Jeffrey Whitford, Director of Global Citizenship. “This would not be possible without the efforts of all our employees and our consistent and unwavering focus on how we can positively affect the environment.”
