Nov 25, 2015 7:00 PM ET

At the BSR Conference 2015, we sat down with plenary speakers and sustainability thought leaders to discuss resilience in their organizations and what defines resilient leadership.

Melanne Verveer is director of the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace, and Security; founding partner of Seneca Point Global; and former U.S. Ambassador for Global Women's Issues. She also recently authored the book FAST FORWARD: How Women Can Achieve Power and Purpose, with which she aims to help women and girls find their purpose and move forward in ways they have never moved forward before.

Verveer spoke to us about unleashing the potential of women and girls in order to reduce the world’s vulnerabilities and meet great challenges.

“This today is not just the right thing to do—fundamentally important as that is—it is the smart and strategic thing to do,” said Verveer. “So, for me, resilience means unleashing the potential of half the population of the world to deal with our vulnerabilities.”
