We’ve talked a lot here about the energy-water nexus, which refers to the complex interdependency between energy and water. The fact is that it takes a good deal of energy to collect, treat and transport water, while at the same time, it takes a great deal of water to produce energy, especially when using the thermal power plants that dominate today’s electricity supply. But even more important is the fact that not only are both of these essential, but they are also experiencing critical shortages that can only expect to worsen as the impacts of climate destabilization continue to reveal themselves.

A recent development came to my attention, courtesy of Jim Marston of the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). There is a company called WaterFX that combines the best of current technology to provide what might be the cleanest, most sustainable, water purification system around.

In a nutshell, they can accept water from virtually any source, convert it to pure drinking water using emission-free solar technology, and they can do all that while producing zero discharge. And if that wasn’t enough, they are giving the rights to their technology away, to anyone who wants to use it.
