Today Lilly announced that we have published what is our most comprehensive corporate responsibility report (and an accompanying summary). The report provides a detailed account of our progress on numerous indicators of economic, environmental, and social performance.

We are increasingly linking our CR efforts to our core business strategy and vision to improve global health in the 21st century. In both good and challenging times, we are committed to:

  • continuing to discover and develop innovative medicines. This is the greatest contribution our company makes to society.

  • conducting our business in a responsible way. This includes how we operate our business, from patient safety to workplace practices. It also includes reducing our environmental footprint.

  • improving health for the underserved. This includes our signature corporate responsibility programs that battle multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and non-communicable diseases (specifically diabetes), as well as our Elanco division's commitment to fight hunger.

  • strengthening communities. This includes employee-directed donations through programs such as Lilly Global Giving and our United Way campaign in the U.S.; employee volunteer programs such as Global Day of Service, Connecting Hearts Abroad, and local service opportunities; and efforts to strengthen public education, especially in Lilly's home state of Indiana.

Here are some examples of the type of information you can find in the report. We:

  • helped more than 227,000 people through our patient assistance programs in 2010, a 12 percent increase compared to the previous year;

  • launched new five-year, $60 million commitments through The Lilly NCD Partnership and The Lilly MDR-TB Partnership to improve outcomes for underserved populations;

  • introduced 229 new clinical-trial sites in U.S. locations with diverse populations since 2008;

  • gave approximately $430 million in global charitable contributions in 2010, including cash, products and other in-kind donations;

  • received a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign's "Best Places to Work: Corporate Equality Index" in 2010;

  • selected 200 employees to volunteer for two weeks, on company time, in countries where people lack resources or access to quality health care;

  • reduced serious injury and lost-time injury rates each by 33 percent (from 2007 baseline);

  • decreased water intake by more than 30 percent and waste to landfill by 50 percent compared to 2007;

  • improved energy efficiency by more than 12 percent, compared to 2007, and reduced corresponding greenhouse gas emissions by more than 9 percent.

While there are always areas in which we can improve, we have much of which to be proud. The Lilly family established a lasting legacy of what today we call corporate responsibility, a legacy that permeates and guides our efforts 135 years later. We know we are truly standing on the shoulders of giants—and take that responsibility very seriously.
