Eastman will receive chemical safety excellence awards for outstanding performance in 2011 in its shipping of chemical products, from three major U.S. railroad companies: Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Norfolk Southern Corporation, and Union Pacific Railroad. These awards reflect Eastman’s commitment to rail car maintenance, and to safe practices for loading, unloading, and shipping hazardous materials. To be eligible for each of these awards, a company must ship a large number of hazardous material railcars during the year with zero non-accident related releases (NARs). A NAR is defined as a release of a hazardous material during transportation which is unrelated to an accident.

NARs can be caused by improper securing of a tank car which can allow product or vapor to escape. Human error and mechanical failures are the predominant causes for NARS. Eastman’s materials handling, tank car maintenance, tank car inspection and logistics groups continually work together to improve performance in safety and protect the environment.

In 2011, Eastman shipped over 30,000 tank car shipments of hazardous materials across the five U.S. manufacturing sites: Kingsport, Longview, Jefferson, Texas City, and Chestertown. Well trained operators, a successful tank car preventative maintenance program, and a vigilant focus on making safety a top priority contributed to our ability to achieve this accomplishment.

“These awards show Eastman’s commitment to transportation safety and attention to detail across all sites,” says Jim Fleming, director of Global Logistics. “This accomplishment helps Eastman achieve our corporate safety and environmental goals, and puts Eastman in a favorable position in the chemical industry and with government agencies. We applaud employee efforts which led to this outstanding performance.”
