Kingfisher Around the World

The SCS Kingfisher certification mark is showing up on an increasing number of products around the world.  It differentiates companies that are making a difference for people and the planet, and helps businesses, institutional buyers, government procurement agencies, and consumers make better informed decisions about the environmental, sustainability, and quality aspects of the products and services they use.  This campaign provides news and highlights about these certified products and the innovative companies behind them.

Why the Kingfisher?  Kingfisher birds, ubiquitous and beloved around the world, are known for their keen vision and skillful hunting. These qualities are reminiscent of the functions we perform every day as third-party auditors in the field.  Widely recognized as indicators of environmental health, some Kingfisher species are now threatened with extinction. The SCS Kingfisher serves as a reminder of the power, beauty, and vulnerability of nature in the face of human activities.

The Case for Responsibly Managed Peatlands Certification
Peatlands around the world have long been recognized as the source of valuable resources supporting commercial needs ranging from energy generation to agricultural applications. Simultaneously, peatlands perform vital eco-services, supporting a wide range of biodiversity, sequestering a large percentage of the earth’s terrestrial carbon, and serving as a natural source of fresh drinking water. It is not surprising, therefore, that the use of peatland resources has come under scrutiny. What is clear is that not all peatland management systems have been created equal. As manager of SCS’ Responsibly Managed Peatlands certification program for horticultural peat moss, I have taken a deep dive to understand what responsible management means. Here I'll share what I have learned.

What You Can’t See Can Hurt You: Improving the Air We Breathe Indoors
Air quality is no longer something we can judge by our senses alone, especially indoors. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulates, carbon monoxide, and radon are among the chief culprits for poor indoor air quality, along with dust, mold, and bacteria. Building design, interior design, and building maintenance are key factors influencing your “micro-climate” – that is, the space in which you live and work, and specifically, the air you breathe. Optimizing your micro-climate involves smart design, purchasing, and an understanding of the air around you.
