Smithfield Foods 2017 Sustainability Report: Innovative Prime Fresh Packaging Video
Our new Prime Fresh line uses proprietary, minimalist packaging, which uses 31 percent less packaging than the conventional tubs that hold other pre-sliced deli meats. This provides a host of sustainability benefits such as fewer transportation miles (due to more product able to fit on trucks) and less waste sent to landfill.

Unlikely Allies Are Crowdsourcing Funding and Habitat to Save the Monarch Butterfly
The Monarch Butterfly Habitat Exchange is an innovative market-based program dedicated to restoring and conserving high-quality monarch habitat on America's private working lands. It’s been dubbed an ‘Airbnb for butterflies’ because it’s the only program of its kind that can open the vast untapped potential of large-scale farms and ranches to make habitat available for monarchs at an unprecedented scale and pace.

Smithfield Foods, a global food company that is also the world’s largest hog producer and pork processor, is the first food company to participate in the program, contributing $300,000 to restore key prairie habitat for monarchs in Missouri.

In 2016, we took our environmental stewardship efforts to the next level in what was widely heralded as an ambitious first for our industry: a far-reaching greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goal across our entire supply chain, from feed grain to packaged bacon. We have pledged to reduce our absolute GHG emissions by 25 percent by 2025, which will cut emissions by more than 4 million metric tons (or the equivalent of removing 900,000 cars from the road).
