On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the major hostilities of World War I formally ended. This historic date has been memorialized around the world. Whether recognized as Armistice Day, Remembrance Day or Veterans Day, Nov. 11 serves as a solemn reminder.

The organization I work for—Mercy Corps—strives to alleviate suffering, poverty, and oppression through economic development and emergency relief programs around the world. This work has always been challenging. We’ve seen firsthand the fragmentation of armed actors in the Syrian War or increasing climate variability in the Horn of Africa, a region already made vulnerable by poverty and violent extremism. Add to this complexity, an emerging digital space where media platforms are used to recruit terrorists, manipulate voters, or incite violence against minorities.

White & Case’s 1L Diversity Fellowship program provides qualified first-year law students with experience working with clients, specifically those seeking to create an environment where the diversity of thought and background are not only encouraged, but preferred.
