On the one-year anniversary of the World Humanitarian Summit, Global Citizen and HP joined forces, hosting the Educate Every Child, Everywhere event during the 70th annual Cannes Film Festival. The event brought together corporate partners, members of international press associations and global citizens, to spotlight the progress and dire need for education in emergencies, including through the Education Cannot Wait (ECW) fund.

Each year, HP employees around the world volunteer in their local communities, with support from HP, which offers every employee four paid volunteer hours each month. Harvey made landfall on August 25 near Rockport, Texas, as a Category 4 storm. A state of emergency has been declared in 30 counties, seven counties are under evacuation orders, and a major disaster declaration has been signed by the president. Several hundred thousand are without power, several thousand have been displaced to shelters, and search and rescue efforts are ongoing. America’s first major hurricane to make landfall since 2005, Hurricane Harvey is expected to stall for several days over southern Texas, leading to catastrophic flooding across the region. An estimated 12 million people are under a Flash Flood emergency.
The idea that we can and should use data to solve urban policy problems is widely accepted among policy makers, academic researchers and in the business community. Most mayors have accepted the value of data driven policy by signing on to what might be called the “smart city movement.” Not all urban leaders actually know what it means to be a smart city though.
By following the money, we are now establishing a better line-of-sight into the true costs of using water. This, in turn, has enabled us to begin building a model that will provide our managers not just a truer picture of their water costs, but more precisely where they should focus their water efficiency improvement projects for the greatest benefit. This model is now being tested in some of our mills and will be improved as we learn more.
It is an ongoing challenge for this federal agency to secure the money required to maintain real-time monitoring stations across the country. Moreover, if the USGS stops executing this mission, the benefit of long-term water monitoring data is lost. Enter Domtar. We understand the importance of real-time water quality and stream flow data.
