The online Diamond Route newsletter carries a host of stories that illustrate how the company’s specialists are conserving the areas around its mines and the animals that live there.

This seven-page edition, available free via The Diamond Route website, features a wildlife award for De Beers in South Africa; caribou on the ice road to Canada’s newest diamond mine, Gahcho Kué; cheetah conservation in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa; the green technology behind the latest diamond exploration and sampling ship; the release of a tawny owl called Jenny; and the updated mammal red list of endangered species.

It also asks the question: why did the bullfrog cross the road? That is, especially when the road is busy and they might not make it across safely.

Warwick Mostert, who heads the Biodiversity team in Anglo American (De Beers Group’s parent), said of the first issue of 2017: “We have achieved a great deal in the area of biodiversity and conservation and we are pleased to share it with readers. Our efforts in this field are an important part of the company’s work, sitting alongside our mining operations. We mine nature’s treasures and we treasure nature as well.”
