Visa Named a Top 100 U.S. Green Company
At Visa, our commitment to operating as a responsible and sustainable company includes a focus on understanding and minimizing the environmental footprint of our payments ecosystem. That is why we are pleased to announce our recognition as one of the top 100 U.S. companies on the Newsweek Green Rankings 2017 list, produced in partnership with Corporate Knights. Visa placed at #73, up 170 spots from the previous year ranking and first among U.S.-based payments networks.
“We are proud of the progress we continue to make to drive environmental sustainability throughout the organization,” said Douglas Sabo, vice president, head of Corporate Responsibility & Philanthropy at Visa Inc. “Our latest ranking – along with our being named in 2017 to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and the FTSE4Good Index -- are testaments to the hard work across the company to identify areas of focus, implement reduction initiatives and measure and report on our progress.”
The Newsweek Green Ranking is one of the most recognized environmental performance assessments of the world’s largest publicly traded companies (measured by revenue). The methodology for the 2017 Newsweek Green Rankings is designed to rank these companies on environmental metrics in a rules-based way, focusing on topics such as energy, GHG emissions, water, waste and other factors.
Our environmental ranking reflects our work to measure and address areas in which we have the greatest impact. As of our latest reporting period, Visa has achieved:
- 57 percent of our corporate real estate portfolio by square footage has achieved LEED or similar green-building certification
- 76 percent landfill diversion rate based on available data
- Improvements in our GHG emissions intensities, with emissions per dollar revenue decreasing by 46% from our latest reporting period versus our 2009 baseline
We also continue to invest in energy efficiency efforts in our data centers, conduct annual global environmental footprint assessments and support transparency through our quantitative and qualitative public responses to the CDP Climate Change questionnaire and other reporting submissions.
