In celebration of Women's History Month, female leaders from across Cox Enterprises are sharing insights from their experience throughout the month of March. Jennifer Hightower is Cox Communications' senior vice president and general counsel of law and policy.

What women inspire you and why?

I most admire Condoleezza Rice. She is brilliant, poised and bold. She remained feminine and true to herself in an all-male environment and became the most trusted confidante. She is loyal to her family and her values.

What do you think is the most significant barrier to female leadership?

It’s finding adequate time for work and family. Work should be challenging and demanding for it to be rewarding. But, family is the most important gift one can have. It is a never ending balancing act.

What will be the biggest challenge and opportunity for the generation of women that follow you?

I believe the struggle for a work-life balance will become harder for future generations. As technology advances there is less time for quiet and reflection. It’s important to find time for mindfulness, but with the prevalence of technology, finding this time will only become harder as expectations to stay connected increase.

What are the best and worst decisions you've ever made?

I began my career as a trial lawyer, thinking I would love the courtroom battles. I soon realized that the constant state of daily conflict and combat wasn’t satisfying and actually counter to who I am. I love the law, but realized I wanted to practice it in a different way which led me to corporate law and ultimately to Cox. Now I can say I love the challenges of my work and the people I get to work with on behalf of a company that I love. Best decision hands down!

What is your perspective on work/life balance?

There is never a perfect work and life balance. But, I firmly believe that you can have the life you want if you have support and find the right life partner or have a network of those who believe in you.
