1 Million Kids Workshop Kits Donated by Home Depot During COVID-19
Kids Workshops has been a hands-on program offered inside The Home Depot stores for young doers since 1997. Following new COVID-19 safety procedures, it moved online in August 2020 to provide digital instruction and offer take-home kits for pickup.
In addition to supplying individuals with kits, The Home Deport partnered with The Home Depot Foundation to donate more than 1 million kits to over 100 nonprofit organizations nationwide, including food banks, toy banks, Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCAs.
To make Kids Workshops even more accessible, some nonprofit organizations partnered with teachers to create in-school programs to put the kit donations in the hands of students. One nonprofit, The Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA), has seen popular demand for classes around the tool bench and vanity build kits.
“The tool benches have definitely been a favorite,” says Victoria Rauch, a marketing manager for CEFGA. “I feel like we’re really reaching these schools – not just because they want kids to have a STEM-related activity, but because they want construction back in schools.”
The Atlanta Community Toolbank, another nonprofit partner, has organized a kids lab series to teach tool safety in support of programs like Kids Workshops. They also offer themed Kids Workshops classes, like the upcoming Valentine's Day-inspired mini cornhole game build.
“Our fifth graders had a great experience with the Little Builders Workshop! It was an excellent opportunity for the construction classes to participate in a start-to-finish project in one day,” said Stacy Periman, principal for the Marietta Center for Advanced Academics.
