Action Team Captain Porter Washington Honored by United Way
Porter Washington, Action Team captain from Thornton Academy, received the York County Spirit of Service Award
The United Way of York County Maine has recognized one of our own for his outstanding commitment to community service. Porter Washington, an Action Team captain from Thornton Academy, an active member of our team for the past two years, recently received the United Way’s Youth Spirit of Service Award.
The York County Spirit of Service Award is given annually to a young volunteer with high commitment, a large impact on the York County community, and service beyond others performing similar work. In recognition of Porter’s service, the Kennebunk Savings Foundation awarded $250 to Porter’s charity of choice, Maine Partners for World Health, and $250 toward his educational expenses.
In addition to his community service work, Porter has taken on the added role of creator and webmaster of the Thornton Academy Action Team Facebook site.
The Facebook page is a great way for Porter and the Thornton Academy Action Team to display all of their charitable efforts in hopes of inspiring others to join in on their amazing causes.
Not only does Porter run the entire Facebook account, he also has created an anti-bullying website and he even started his own website creation company. While juggling all of these responsibilities, it’s easy to overlook the fact that Porter is still a high school student—working to make an impact in the lives around him.
It is Action Team Captains like Porter, who regularly visits the Paul Hazelton House--a senior housing facility--to bring companionship to the residents, who continue to go above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of others.
We are proud to have Porter on our Team.
