AECOM Trains Field Employees on Cultural Sensitivity Following Oso Landslide Tragedy
Following the Oso Landslide tragedy in Washington, United States, AECOM’s Stacy Schneyder-Bumback ensured all field employees were properly trained on cultural sensitivity towards those affected by the disaster.
Stacy Schneyder-Bumback, AECOM senior archaeologist, buildings + places, Western Region, Mountain/Northwest District, is a strong advocate of AECOM’s “culture of caring.” As field project manager leading the removal of debris following the Oso Landslide tragedy, she continuously emphasized the importance of sensitivity towards those affected by the disaster while maintaining the health and safety of the work crew and contractors.
Stacy ensured that all field employees were trained on cultural sensitivity at the beginning of the project and as future needs arose. She also worked with her team to effectively manage a diverse group of 110 personnel through appropriate health and safety planning and training, skillful coordination with other contractors onsite, a strong safety culture where issues were addressed quickly and thoroughly, and a safety-performance employee-recognition program.
“The safety culture we worked hard to establish encouraged a team mentality where employees looked after one another and felt empowered to provide constructive feedback to their peers and elevate concerns to their supervisors,” said Stacy. “Despite known and unknown hazards when working with a natural disaster site, the team’s commitment to safety and to each other helped to make this project a success from day one.”
