AEP to Retire more than 5,100 MW of Coal-Fired Capacity

AEP has or will retire more than 5,100 MW of coal-fired capacity to comply with new environmental rules and other factors, including low natural gas prices and aging infrastructure.  The transition to a more sustainable fuel mix will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing AEP’s coal-fired generating capacity.

For decades, one of the lowest-cost resources to produce electricity in the United States has been coal.  It has provided customers with reliable, affordable power and is an important source of jobs.
