American Electric Power - Enerfab and AEP, Partners of the Job, Partners in Safety
Extending Safety to Contractors
Enerfab, a Cincinnati, Ohio-based company, has installed environmental controls and other equipment - and performed ongoing maintenance and repair work - at a variety of AEP's eastern power plants for more than 20 years. During that time, as AEP's safety culture evolved, so did Enerfab's. The two companies have very similar safety philosophies and levels of commitment to safety.
Enerfab is the nation's largest employer of International Brotherhood of Boilermakers members. Approximately 28% of AEP's workforce is represented by a union.AEP and Enerfab share lessons learned and other safety-related information freely. Some basic tenets of Enerfab's safety culture and emphasis include:
-
Safety is planned/built in each project
-
Every job site will have systems and people in place to ensure a safe working environment
-
All employees are held personally accountable for their actions when it comes to safety
Enerfab tracks incidents of all types, whether they are recordable, non-recordable or near-misses. This enables employees to learn from past experience and is another tool to prevent incidents.
The relationship between AEP and Enerfab is driven in large part by the mutual commitment to "target zero" and dedication to a "safety first" culture.
