Aramark and American Heart Association Teach Philadelphia Moms Healthy Shopping Tips as part of Educational Series on Living a Healthy Lifestyle
The grocery store tour is part of a 12-week program, Healthy for Life, by Aramark and the AHA, devoted to teaching simple strategies for families in underserved communities to change their eating behaviors and lead healthier lifestyles.
Local moms from Episcopal Community Services in Philadelphia recently visited a grocery store in their neighborhood to participate in a healthy eating class led by an Aramark registered dietitian. On the tour, the dietitian taught participants tips for navigating the grocery store and shopping smarter, including planning meals in advance, always having a list and budget before going into the store, and buying items in bulk to freeze for future meal planning.
This class is part of Aramark and the American Heart Association’s new community health engagement program, which was created in collaboration with local community centers in Philadelphia, Houston and Chicago. Aramark and the AHA developed a pilot program to teach simple strategies that change attitudes and behaviors around food and health by equipping individuals with new skills for healthy living. Following the pilot period, successful solutions will be replicated for broader impact across the country in partnership with the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities, a network of more than 500 community-based social service organizations.
Aramark and the AHA have worked together over the past year on their Healthy for Life® 20 by 20 initiative, to improve the diet and health of all Americans by 20% by 2020. The multi-faceted program includes industry leading menu commitments by Aramark, consumer education and awareness, and the development of the health and wellness community engagement program.
