LINCOLN, Neb., January 12, 2018 /3BL Media/ – The Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with Neat Streets Miami, the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces Department, FedEx and Verizon will be gifting trees to area residents affected by Hurricane Irma. The distribution event will take place during Florida’s Arbor Day weekend on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at the North Park Trail, 780 NW 127 Avenue, Miami, FL, 33182, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Miami-Dade County residents will be able to select from a three-gallon fruit or other native trees, while supplies last.
This event kicks off the Arbor Day Foundation’s hurricane tree recovery campaign to get millions of trees back in the ground in the wake of hurricane devastation in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico. The initiative, which has engaged both public and private partners, aims to plant and distribute five (5) million trees over the next five (5) years.
“The residents of Miami suffered a great personal and physical loss due to the devastation of Hurricane Irma,” said Dan Lambe, Arbor Day Foundation president. “While many of their personal belongings and dwellings may have been covered by insurance the beauty of their landscape is a personal burden. By providing these free trees we can help area residents restore the canopy and beauty to their neighborhoods for their families and generations to come.”
In August and September, hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria left a path of devastation in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico, impacting homes and critical infrastructure. The hurricanes damaged and destroyed millions of trees in yards, parks and forests across the states and territory. The hurricane tree recovery campaign, which is part of the Arbor Day Foundation’s Community Tree Recovery program, will not only be helping the states of Florida and Texas and the territory of Puerto Rico but will also be assisting other communities devastated by natural disasters that occurred in 2017.
“We are grateful to the Arbor Day Foundation, FedEx, and Verizon for helping our residents rebuild the precious tree canopy that was lost during Hurricane Irma,” Miami-Dade County’s Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces Department Director Maria I. Nardi shared. “Their generous donation will help to beautify neighborhoods all while supporting Neat Street Miami’s Million Trees Miami initiative. It is my hope that through the planting of these trees our residents get back to feeling like themselves and enjoy some ‘green’ healing!”
