Arrow Electronics Sponsors Junior Achievement Business Week for Colorado High School Students
CENTENNIAL, Colo., June 13, 2017 /3BL Media/ - Arrow Electronics is again the presenting sponsor for Junior Achievement Business Week, a week-long residential business “boot camp” experience for students in grades 9-12 taking place June 11–16 on the Johnson & Wales campus in Denver. JA Business Week provides students from all walks of life with the entrepreneurial and interpersonal skills that will help them succeed when they enter the work force.
This year, more than 40 juniors and seniors are lined up to tackle an important real-world challenge project devised by Arrow: Develop a business plan to address the problem of global e-waste in a sustainable way.
Fifty million tons of technology waste was created globally last year, yet only 10 million tons was recycled responsibly. Arrow works around the world to keep electronic waste out of landfills by refurbishing computers, phones, tablets and other electronics products, then selling or donating them.
Through the challenge, students will act as “consultants” for Arrow. The team will create a business strategy encompassing the areas of finance, sales, marketing and design, and corporate social responsibility. The goal is to achieve both an environmentally responsible and profitable business solution, then present recommendations at week’s end in a “Shark Tank”-style competition to Arrow executives.
“These young students will wrestle with the exact same challenges we face at Arrow every day,” said Alex West of Arrow’s global corporate social responsibility team. ”We’re looking forward to hearing their creative approaches for adding value to the product lifecycle through sustainable technology solutions that also improve the environment.”
In addition to its corporate sponsorship, Arrow employees are supporting JA Business Week directly. Many participating students received scholarship funds raised through an Arrow-sponsored bowl-a-thon this past spring and 40 Arrow volunteers will lead sessions and mentor students throughout the week.
