Balfour Beatty Construction's Dallas office achieves LEED Gold certification.

DALLAS, AUGUST 6, 2013 /3BL Media/ Balfour Beatty Construction was recently awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification under the LEED for Commercial Interiors (LEED C-I) for their 3100 McKinnon Street office located in Dallas, Texas. The firm remodeled their North Texas home office with sustainability and green building elements as the key focus. LEED Gold certification for the Dallas office marks the fourth LEED-certified Balfour Beatty Construction office in the Unites States with offices in California, North Carolina and Virginia also receiving LEED certifications.

Balfour Beatty worked with Dallas-based interior design and architecture firm Staffelbach to plan a space that provides a healthy and productive work environment while reducing the carbon footprint. The LEED Gold certification supports Balfour Beatty’s company-wide commitment to significantly reduce their carbon footprint by 2020 and  proves their commitment to sustainable business practices.

The new space provides private offices, open workstations, conference rooms and break areas for employees. Lighting controls and occupancy sensors, Energy Star rated equipment and appliances, low-flow water fixtures and dedicated recycling areas all contribute to office sustainability.

“Conscious construction is about more than just saving money through energy efficiency; it creates a quality environment which boosts morale in employees who often spend more time at work than at home,” said Jo Heinz, Staffelbach President and CEO . “Companies can effectively use sustainable and healthy workplaces as a tool to recruit and retain fresh talent.”

Throughout demolition and project progress, Balfour Beatty removed 17 tons of construction waste.. More than 95 percent of construction waste was diverted from landfills. Recycled materials include carpet tile, wiring, miscellaneous metals, tin, drywall, and light fixtures. More than 24 percent of the total cost of remodel materials came from recycled content.

“Balfour Beatty believes at the heart of a sustainable business is the creation, care, and responsible use of assets – whether those assets be people or time, capital investment, land use or water, we must use those resources responsibly,” stated Doug Jones, Regional CEO for Balfour Beatty Construction.
