Barrick Achieves Dow Jones Sustainability World Index Ranking for Sixth Consecutive Year

TORONTO, September 12, 2013 /3BL Media/ — Barrick Gold Corporation has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI) for the sixth consecutive year, and has also been included on the DJSI’s North American index of leading companies for a seventh straight year.

“It’s an honor to be recognized again this year by this highly-regarded and long-standing global sustainability index,” said Jamie Sokalsky, Barrick’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “The DJSI provides a very important benchmark for our progress in mining responsibly.

The DJSI World Index independently evaluates more than 2,500 global companies using rigorous sustainability criteria to identify the top ten percent of performers. Companies are assessed based on a range of sustainability metrics, including governance, social performance, environment and economic contributions — taking into account both industry-specific trends, as well as sustainability issues facing multiple sectors.

Barrick knows that operating in a responsible manner creates significant value for its shareholders, employees, local communities and host-country governments. In 2012, Barrick contributed $13.8 billion in the form of wages and benefits, royalties and taxes, local procurement and community investments to its host countries. This includes $6.4 billion in communities in the developing and emerging economies where Barrick operates.
