Barrick Ranked Among Top 30 in Fight Against Climate Change in Chile
(3BL Media / theCSRfeed) September 2, 2011 - Barrick Gold was ranked by the Chile Foundation (Fundación Chile) and Capital Magazine (Revista Capital) as one of the top 30 companies in Chile taking steps to fight climate change.
The rankings encompassed companies from a wide range of sectors, underscoring a growing recognition by businesses of the critical need to address environmental issues.
“This is an important achievement coming from a well respected source in Chile,” said Fernando Rodriguez, Barrick’s environment director for the South America region. “Barrick has made important changes and improvements in South American in recent years, creating an energy efficiency culture, developing renewable energy projects and defining our carbon footprint.”
To be considered for the top-30 list, companies had to fill out a detailed questionnaire and make executives available for in-person interviews.
Companies were measured on a variety of criteria, including management’s commitment to combating climate change, the degree to which climate-change initiatives are integrated into corporate strategy, controls used to measure carbon footprint, use of renewable energy sources and communication about climate-change initiatives.
The recognition from the Chile Foundation and Capital Magazine comes as Barrick completes phase one of its Punta Colorada wind farm. The $70 million project will generate up to 20 megawatts of electricity in the initial phase and link to Chile’s national power grid. At full capacity, the wind farm will generate 36 megawatts of electricity, enough power for 20,000 homes.
The Chile Foundation is a highly respected non-profit corporation dedicated to Chile’s economic development. Capital Magazine is a widely read monthly financial publication.
