B.C. West Coast Grizzly Tour
It’s been a busy May and June for the BC Salmon Farmers Association, and we have been involved in some pretty great experiences and adventures.
On May 22, salmon farmers joined Tide Rip Grizzly Adventures, based out of Telegraph Cove, for a day-long tour to learn more about B.C.’s eco-tourism industry and the behaviours of our province’s grizzly bears.
Embarking on a scenic boat ride that crossed into Knights Inlet, on the mainland adjacent to North Vancouver Island, this was a once in a lifetime experience. Our very knowledgeable guide, Lindsey Pattinson, pointed out some grizzly bears sauntering along the shoreline, turning over rocks and searching for food, including two young 1-year old sibling cubs that weighed approximately 200lbs (pictured below). We learned that the tideline represents the primary source of food for grizzlies at this time of year.
With mating season just starting we had the unique opportunity to observe a large male grizzly in pursuit of a female. Unfortunately for the male, his pursuit was in vain, which is common this early in the mating season.
In total we saw 6 bears and enjoyed learning more about their behaviours.
As we made our way back, we had the pleasure of stopping for lunch at the beautiful Lagoon Cove Marina, courtesy of our tour guide. The day was an incredible experience and reminder of how fortunate we are to live in beautiful British Columbia.
