Bombardier Wins Gold in RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards
Awards scheme recognises commitment to accident and ill health prevention
June 4, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation has been recognised for the second year running by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents for its approach to occupational health and safety. The company won two gold awards at a ceremony in Birmingham – one for the high standards achieved at its Crewe heavy maintenance site, the other for the overall performance of its UK Services business.
Dating back 57 years, the RoSPA Awards scheme is the largest and longest-running programme of its kind in the UK. It is open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas. The scheme looks at accident records, and also entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.
David Rawlins, RoSPA’s awards manager, said: “RoSPA firmly believes that organisations that demonstrate commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention deserve recognition. Bombardier Transportation has shown that it is committed to striving for such continuous improvement and we are delighted to honour it through the presentation of an award.”
Promoting employee health and safety is an essential element of Bombardier’s Corporate Social Responsibility commitment. Bombardier encourages its workforce to take personal responsibility for safety and reducing accidents. A communications campaign, ‘Safety With Attitude – let’s just do it’, was created to support this objective and aims to achieve a change in attitudes and behaviour in relation to health and safety across Bombardier’s UK sites.
‘Safety With Attitude’ recently won an award for Internal Communications Excellence at the annual Rail Business Awards, which recognise excellence across the rail industry. The campaign involves all of Bombardier’s services locations in the UK – 31 in total – encompassing both Bombardier owned sites and customers’ depots. Since the campaign’s inception in late 2010, the company has witnessed a 40% reduction in all accidents, a 70% reduction in days lost through accidents, and a 50% reduction in serious injuries.
