From the coal mines of Appalachia to the tar sands sites of Alberta, Canada, the fossil fuel industry has left a catastrophic swathe of destruction in its wake. Oftentimes, the people impacted by pollution are those already marginalized in society: women, people of color, the poor. Many vulnerable communities, however, are fighting back to reclaim their homeland and their rights. We must work toward a paradigm shift that expands our understanding of humanity while also incorporating an awareness of the earth.
