Cargill Installs 1,000-Meter Water Supply Pipeline to Improve Water Access for 1,200 Farming Households in Karnataka’s Bannikodu Village
Part of project SAATHI: Working with 5,000 farming households in Davangere
Cargill strengthened the water supply network for 1,200 farming households in Bannikodu village, Karnataka, India, by installing a 1,000-meter water supply pipeline. Demonstrating its commitment to strengthen agricultural communities, Cargill linked an existing bore well on the lower side of the village to the water tank on the upper side, making tap water available for nearby homes.
Due to continuous drought this year, Karnataka is facing acute water shortages. This summer has been especially difficult for residents of Bannikodu village due to a water supply problem which arose due to the non-uniform distribution of water. The families living on lower side of village were receiving abundant water vis-à-vis the ones living on upper side and this had also resulted in tension in the village.
Cargill responded promptly to the request to lay the pipeline in the village. This pipeline links the existing bore well on the lower side of the village to the water tank on the upper side of the village and consistently addresses the water requirement of the 1,200 households in the village. Today, the villagers are getting tap water near their houses without having to fetch the water from the common tap at some distance.
Community engagement and sustainable development is one of the important components of Cargill’s SAATHI project, a four-year Davangere Local Economic Development project which aims to impact the lives of 5,000 farming households in the community. The project works on agriculture development and diversification, livelihood development for youth, economic empowerment for women and community development. Cargill has partnered with TechnoServe, a non-profit development organization, which is helping in implementing the project on the ground.
