Carlos Gomez Helps Establish $13,000 Scholarship Fund for Hispanic Students
Carlos Gomez has helped establish a $13,000 fund to award scholarships for Hispanic students to attend Milwaukee Area Technical College.
A $4,000 commitment from Gomez was matched by a $4,000 donation from the League of United Latin American Citizens Council #333 and a $5,000 donation from the Milwaukee Area Technical College Foundation to create the MATC LULAC Carlos Gomez Hispanic Scholarship Fund.
The announcement came before Gomez’s 2nd annual At-Bat fundraising event at the school this past Sunday. Brewers teammates Martin Maldonado, Wily Peralta and Jean Segura joined Gomez at the school’s downtown campus for the event, which featured a live auction, a raffle, food and beverages.
Gomez, a native of the Dominican Republic, who left school to pursue baseball as a way to help support his family, was also presented with the 2015 LULAC Education Award in recognition of his efforts to help people seeking a college education.
“To have Carlos Gomez here, the Brewers here, it is quiet an honor,” said Darryl Morin, the ULAC ‘s vice president. “I was touched by his [Gomez’s] story … to make sure the dreams that other children have to get a college education is real and this is why he is doing this.”
