CBRE: Environmental Sustainability
The 2016 CBRE Corporate Responsibility Report highlights many of the company’s milestones in environmental sustainability.
We updated our Environmental Sustainability Policy at the end of 2016. The new policy has nine areas of focus:
- Environmental Targets
- Occupancy
- Internal Certification
- Client Services
- Public Policy
- Thought Leadership
- Compliance with Laws and Regulations
- Corporate Responsibility and Reporting
- Global Corporate Responsibility Governance
In 2016, we developed our first global emissions reduction goal, which is an absolute goal to reduce Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions 30% by 2025 and 50% by 2035, using a baseline year of 2015. Scope 2 emissions result from the electricity we purchase and consume in our offices.
The CR Report also highlights a number of energy and sustainability projects that we performed for clients across the Americas, EMEA and APAC. These include LEED® certifications and NABERS ratings, as well as projects that helped our clients achieve significant energy, water and waste reductions.
Our innovative Real Green Research Challenge program, which was launched in 2012 to encourage and support academic research teams seeking answers to fundamental questions around sustainability activities in the built environment, has produced many interesting outcomes. Research projects have shown what sustainability characteristics tenants seek—and which ones they are willing to pay for, modeled energy consumption on corporate campuses and measured the growth of green building certifications in the 30 largest U.S. office markets. Additional outcomes include the development of a management tool that measures the impact of more than a dozen environmental, social and governance elements on rental achievement, as well as the discovery of the nature and likelihood of energy-efficiency actions undertaken by various real estate ownership structures.
