CDP Recognizes Grupo Financiero Banorte Among The Top 10 Companies In Latin America In Disclosure And Performance With Respect To Climate Change
On October 25th, Grupo Financiero Banorte (GFNorte), represented by its Sustainable Banking Director Marcos Mancini, participated in an event organized by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), where the CDP Latin America 2012 Report was released. This report publishes, among other things, the top Latin American responses supplied to the Investor CDP, in the categories of Disclosure and Performance.
In such categories, the CDP recognized GFNorte among the top 10 Latin American companies, reflecting, both the institution's understanding of its climate change related risks and opportunities (Disclosure), as well as the steps it is taking to address them (Performance).
According to such report, the CDP was recently recognized as the most reliable sustainability rating organization by “Rate the Raters 2012”, a survey by Globescan and SustainAbility that evaluates international sustainability rankings.
There are clearly many challenges ahead in addressing climate change. More than anything, the CDP's recognition inspires GFNorte to keep working on integrating climate change into its business strategy, improving its performance, as well as, using its influence to promote climate change awareness.
To this end, GFNorte's CEO, Alejandro Valenzuela, recently participated in the Carbon Disclosure Project's Global Climate Change Forum along with other decision-makers from major global companies and thought-leaders.
Valenzuela noted the complex dynamics between sustainability (long term) and a short-term market and the need to successfully combine both. Nevertheless, he noted how Mexico’s newly enacted Climate Change law is a key step in the right direction.
Still, companies must also play a key role in driving and incentivizing action around climate change, he noted. GFNorte sees its recognition by the CDP as an opportunity to invite Mexican companies to join forces and make a common front against climate change. As Alejandro Valenzuela said at the CDP Global Forum: "The corporation moving forward will be fundamental to solving this issue, governments cannot alone”.
