Plant-based resources often seem infinite until they are suddenly depleted, and because tequila comes from the agave plant - specifically the blue agave - it’s imperative to keep stocks maintained to ensure plentiful supply in the future. But part of maintaining these crops means being mindful of other components of sustainability: energy use, repurposing, and waste.
For Patrón Tequila, this means overhauling their existing systems to be more environmentally friendly. “Over the past few years, we’ve taken important, industry-leading steps to limit the environmental impact of our tequila production,” says Antonio Rodriguez, Director of Production at Patrón. Rodriguez adds that the company has always had a mind for sustainability: “Being able to produce more tequila without negative environmental implications has always been in the Patrón DNA,” but with tequila’s rise in popularity, plus the growth of waste technology, optimization was necessary.
