This week, the Bloomberg Philanthropy & Engagement team, Chairman Peter Grauer and 100 Best of Bloomberg volunteers took more than 1,000 students from 16 London schools to a special theater performance to celebrate the culmination of the first year of the Bloomberg Startup program in the UK. Bloomberg Startup is the company’s global education program to support academic achievement for underrepresented youth around the world.
Many of the school children, aged 11 to 16, have engaged in Bloomberg’s series of modules and workshops focused on science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics (STEAM) over the year. Taught by Bloomberg volunteers and mentors, the Bloomberg Startup modules aim to improve literacy, university and career readiness, and are held in collaboration with Bloomberg’s long-term education partners, including Ark, Teach First and Prince’s Trust. Since the program launched in London last year, over 2,000 students have visited Bloomberg’s European headquarters and engaged with Bloomberg’s non-profit partners around the country.
After an introduction from Chairman Peter Grauer, the students enjoyed a performance of wonder.land at the Bloomberg Philanthropies supported National Theatre. The new musical, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s iconic Alice in Wonderland, is a coming-of-age adventure combining live theater and digital technology in exciting new ways.
Bloomberg Philanthropies has supported the National Theatre since 2001 and is currently the National Theatre’s Partner for New Audiences. This collaborative partnership supports the National Theatre’s long-term goal of introducing new and diverse audiences to their world-class programming, both within and out of the main theatre space. More than 48,000 people have engaged in the New Audiences program since its launch in April 2015.
