New York, New York, June 12, 2014 /3BL Media/ – Citi today announced that Pamela Flaherty, Director of Corporate Citizenship, Citi and President and CEO, the Citi Foundation, has been honored by the World Resources Institute at its biennial Courage to Lead event, recognizing leaders who whose global vision has inspired people and changed institutions and industries to create a better world. In her role at Citi, Flaherty is leading the firm’s approach to numerous global environmental and economic development challenges, including climate change and financial inclusion.

"Pam is a brilliant leader who has been a driving force to ensure that sustainability is incorporated into Citi's core business strategies," said Andrew Steer, President and CEO, WRI. "WRI has enjoyed a long and productive relationship with Citi, which has been a strong supporter of environmental standards in the financial sector. We look forward to expanding our collaboration, including on sustainable urban development, in the years ahead."

“Under Pam’s leadership on environmental and social issues, Citi has become a better, more responsible company,” said Mike Corbat, CEO, Citi. “She is the driving force in guiding our sustainability strategy and has been a leader in developing industry guidelines for environmental and social risk management broadly. We’re proud that she has been recognized by WRI for her contributions, and we look forward to building on her accomplishments.”

Under Flaherty’s leadership, Citi:

  • Has directed, in partnership with our clients, $54 billion towards renewable energy and clean technology since 2007
  • Was a founding member and co-drafted the Equator Principles, now the gold standard for assessing environmental and social risks in project finance
  • Has reduced its GHG emissions from operations by 25% since 2005
  • Has produced an annual report on its Corporate Citizenship efforts since 2000, increasing transparency and disclosure on key environmental, social and governance indicators.

As President and CEO of the Citi Foundation, Flaherty has focused strategic philanthropic investments around the core themes of financial inclusion and economic empowerment.  Since 2007, she has managed over $550 million in investments impacting millions of people. In 2013 alone, the Citi Foundation enabled 1.3 million people around the world to work towards specific economic empowerment goals.

Flaherty’s 45 year career at Citi has spanned numerous management positions. Previously, she managed Citibank’s New York retail banking business and served as Citi’s Senior Human Resources Officer. She began her career at the company in Citi’s International Banking Group. She is on the Board of Trustees of Johns Hopkins University and also participates on the Boards of several non-profit organizations, including Colonial Williamsburg and The Nature Conservancy Long Island Chapter. Pam is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

WRI’s engagement with Citi dates back to the 1990s. WRI and Citi have worked together on the Equator Principles, greening Citi’s operations, environmental entrepreneurship, greening business school education, and integrating environmental considerations into equity research. Pam and Citi actively supported and encouraged WRI in taking its work to China at a time when few US-based organizations were looking at how to promote sustainability in that fast growing economy.

The Courage to Lead luncheon brings together business leaders, philanthropists, civic leaders, and concerned citizens to advance WRI’s mission and programs, which focus on tackling six urgent environment and economic development challenges: climate change, forests, water, climate, energy, cities & transport. Along with Flaherty, this year’s event honored James A. Harmon, Founder and Chairman of Caravel Management and WRI’s Board Chairman. The event included remarks by the Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton and Judith Rodin, President, Rockefeller Foundation, along with Daniel L. Doctoroff, President and CEO, Bloomberg LP, and Andrew Steer, President and CEO, WRI.
