A Day of Service with Alexion Interns
Alexion’s interns like to stay ahead of the curve. While the majority of employees will be spending Thursday, September 26th volunteering with nonprofit organizations around the globe, Alexion’s summer interns could not wait. On Wednesday, August 7th almost 30 volunteers from Alexion’s Boston headquarters spent the day at CASPAR (Cambridge And Somerville Programs for Addiction Recovery), a center for addiction recovery based in Cambridge, MA. CASPAR was founded in 1970 to meet the needs of the 10 percent of the local population that suffers from substance abuse.
Upon arriving at the center, a group of the volunteers quickly got to work cleaning the mats the visitors sleep on and sorting the donations room. Lisa Camacho, a shelter volunteer who maintains the donations room, was thrilled when two volunteers moved a heavy armoire into the small room so the center could store clothing in a more organized way. “I haven’t seen her this happy since I started working here,” said David Hirschberg, VP of Development for Bay Cove Human Services, CASPAR’s parent organization.
At the same time, another group of volunteers assembled in the kitchen to ready a BBQ dinner for those at the shelter. A friendly potato salad competition began between the information technology and compliance interns, and while the jury is still out on whose salad was better, there is no doubt that the shelter’s guests left with full stomachs. “To be honest, my favorite part was connecting with the community members,” said Daniel Keating, Alexion’s corporate social responsibility intern. “It’s important to me to get out and help others. Working for Alexion really makes that easy to do.”
