Diageo Applauds Government's Alcohol Language in 2015 U.S. Dietary Guidelines
NORWALK, Conn., January 7, 2016 /3BL Media/ – “We applaud the USDA and HHS for underscoring and reiterating in the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans that there is no ‘drink of moderation,’ only the practice of moderation,” said Guy L. Smith, Executive Vice President, Diageo North America. “Not only do they reaffirm the definition of what they call ‘a drink-equivalent’ as 0.6 fluid ounces of pure alcohol, but they also provide clear reference examples including 12 ounces of regular beer (5% alcohol), 5 ounces of wine (12% alcohol), or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits (40% alcohol). These examples give Americans an easy to understand way to keep track of how much alcohol they are consuming.
“These standard serving sizes are also the basis for providing macronutritional information, including number of calories and grams of carbohydrates, protein and fat, about beverage alcohol products. For the past twelve years in the US, Diageo has advocated for the right to be able to include serving fact information on our products. This spring, Diageo made a global commitment to begin sharing this information on our DRINKiQ website and on our labels where possible, and this fall in the US we began rolling out our first Crown Royal packages featuring a serving facts panel. Consumers want straightforward and practical information to help them make responsible decisions about what they eat and drink, and as a company that prides itself on promoting responsible consumption, we are delighted that the Government has reinforced the clear science on this issue.”
