El Lago Named “Green Power Community” in Texas by U.S. EPA
El Lago, Texas, and Green Mountain Energy celebrate recognition of green power usage
EL LAGO, Texas, April 19, 2017 /3BL Media/ – The city of El Lago, Texas, has been designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a “Green Power Community.” El Lago, the only city in Texas to currently hold this recognition, is collectively using more than 1.2 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually from Green Mountain Energy. El Lago and Green Mountain partnered on the EPA application to be recognized as a Green Power Community. They announced the recognition at El Lago’s City Celebration and Easter Egg Hunt on April 8, 2017.
“The city of El Lago is proud to be recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for our green efforts,” said Robert White, mayor of El Lago. “Even though we’re a small city, we can help influence major change in the world – one light switch at a time. We hope this recognition will inspire other communities across Texas to support renewable energy.”
To help El Lago receive this recognition, Green Mountain Energy powers all El Lago city services with 100 percent clean wind energy and provides a five percent exclusive discount to all El Lago residents who purchase a renewable energy electricity plan from Green Mountain.
“Green Mountain Energy is honored to support the city and residents of El Lago in their mission to become an EPA Green Power Community in Texas,” said Mark Parsons, vice president and general manager of Green Mountain Energy Company. “In working with institutions like El Lago, we can maintain a foundation of green power for today and the future.”
The EPA’s Green Power Communities are towns, villages, cities, counties or tribal governments in which the local government, businesses and residents collectively use green power in amounts that meet or exceed the EPA’s Green Power Community usage requirements.
