Elsevier's Maturitas Publishes Position Statement on the Topic of Late Parenthood
AMSTERDAM, September 3, 2013 /3BL Media/ – Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced the publication of a position statement by the European Menopause and Andropause Society (EMAS) in the journal Maturitas on the topic of late parenthood.
Couples have been delaying parenthood with an average increase of one year per decade since the 1970s. However, advanced parental age is associated with infertility and pregnancy complications and may have an impact on long-term offspring health. The EMAS’ position statement recommends that all adults of reproductive age should receive counseling about the risks involved surrounding advanced parental age, so they can make informed decisions about the timing of childbearing. At the same time, all parents-to-be of advanced age should receive advice regarding their pregnancy, neonatal and long-term offspring health-related issues. These tasks require an interdisciplinary approach that should lead to patient-centered, informed decision-making strategies.
These and other recommendations presented in EMAS’ position statement are published in the article: “EMAS position statement: Late parenthood” by Gesthimani Mintziori, Irene Lambrinoudaki, Efstratios M. Kolibianakis, Iuliana Ceausu, Herman Depypere, C. Tamer Erel, Faustino R. Pérez-López, Karin Schenck-Gustafsson, Yvonne van der Schouw, Tommaso Simoncini, Florence Tremollieres, Basil C. Tarlatzis, Margaret Rees and Dimitrios G. Goulis (10.1016/j.maturitas.2013.07.008).The article appears in Maturitas Volume 76, Issue 2 (October 2013), published by Elsevier.
