Exceptional Academy and Comerica Host Networking Meet-and-Greet

Comerica’s commitment to disability inclusion in the community was at the center of the bank’s meet-and-greet with the Exceptional Academy hosted at the Livonia Operations Center.

The recently launched Exceptional Academy, a joint effort between the Living and Learning Enrichment Center, Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS), Michigan Career and Technical Institute (MCTI), along with support from a former Cisco executive, features a nine-month classroom program focused on training adults with disabilities to gain access to careers in technology through Cisco cybersecurity certification training (CCNA-Security).

The networking session offered an opportunity for Comerica and other corporate sponsors to network and engage with students and their families to learn more about how the professional development and training program positively impacts their lives.

Sangy Vatsa, Comerica Bank executive vice president and chief information officer, encouraged students and their families to stay committed to the learning opportunities presented through the academy over nine months.

“When we put our mind to something important and make a sincere commitment and effort, nothing is impossible to achieve if it is practically feasible to achieve,” said Vatsa.

Earlier this year, Comerica became the first organization to commit support for this this program, which includes hiring graduates for internships in 2020 to continue guidance and coaching.

Additionally, Comerica will provide resources from the bank’s Technology Center in Auburn Hills, which includes participation on the advisory committee, guest lecturing and hosting candidates throughout the program.

“One of the most valuable aspects of the Exceptional Academy includes the access we have to build relationships with these outstanding participants and assist them through their journey,” said Lori Walker, Comerica Bank vice president and senior diversity and inclusion consultant.

“When we recommended the meet-and-greet as part of our support, we felt strongly that these early interactions would produce great results, and from the initial meetings we look forward to what’s ahead,” said Walker.

The Exceptional Academy networking event highlights one of the many efforts Comerica’s Diversity and Inclusion team, led by Nathan Bennett, chief diversity officer and head of talent acquisition, is currently developing and supporting.
