Foundation-Funded Program Equips Students to Preserve Long Island’s Water Resources
ScottsMiracle-Gro is deeply invested in the future of Long Island and its water resources. The Long Island Water Education Program, run by the North Shore Land Alliance and funded by The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation, connects area students with the water resources under their feet. Through in-class STEM education and hands-on field learning, middle-years students learn about Long Island’s sole source aquifer and how their actions can affect water resources. They build mini-models of the aquifer and begin to understand the link between conserving land and protecting water.
Response from student participants and educators has been strong. Following are just a few of the comments we have received in the past year.
About available potable water:
- "I never knew that such a small percentage of our planet's water supply is drinking water."
- "I always thought we had plenty of drinking water since we live on an island."
- "Now I know why we should conserve water."
About open space:
- "I will look at my back yard differently because I know it can bring water to the aquifer."
