Freeport-McMoRan Operations Receive Two Wildlife Habitat Council Awards

March 17, 2017 /3BL Media/ - The Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) partners with organizations dedicated to restoring and enhancing wildlife habitat on corporate lands. Freeport-McMoRan has been a member for many years and currently has 15 operating sites/facilities that are WHC certified at the gold level.

• ​Safford won the Avian Project Award for a burrowing owl project. Safford started working with Wild at Heart on the burrowing owl program in 2011 to bolster the local burrowing owl population and encourage owl breeding in the new habitat. Safford employees and volunteers helped construct artificial nesting burrows and relocated owls displaced by development.
• The Grasslands Project Award was granted to the Tyrone Operations for demonstrating exemplary management of their reclamation areas as wildlife habitat – a commitment that spans many years and many processes. 3,500 acres of stockpiles and tailings impoundments from mining operations have been re-contoured and reseeded to create wildlife habitat consistent with the native ecosystem. The construction activities and reclamation also are monitored.
