Freeport-McMoRan Receives Two Wildlife Habitat Council Awards, Three New Certifications

March 24, 2015 /3BL Media/ - The Wildlife Habitat Council recently granted Freeport-McMoRan two awards, three new wildlife program certifications and six re-certifications for existing programs given out at its annual symposium.

The WHC partners with organizations dedicated to restoring and enhancing wildlife habitat on corporate lands. Freeport-McMoRan has been a member for many years and now has 18 sites with WHC-certified habitat enhancement, conservation education and wildlife management programs.

  • PT Freeport Indonesia received the prestigious Corporate Lands for Learning of the Year award for outstanding environmental education, stewardship and voluntary employee efforts. PTFI is located in one of the world’s richest biodiversity regions. The site has established wildlife areas, partners with local schools for education outreach and provides internships at an on-site nursery for high school and college students. PTFI was recognized for its work with more than 70 local schools and education outreach activities that reach hundreds of students every month.

  • The WHC together with Bat Conservation International honored Cerro Verde with the Bat Conservation Action award, which recognizes programs that actively manage bat habitat through restoration and protection activities. Cerro Verde received the award for its efforts to monitor and protect Platalina genovensium, a species listed as Near Threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and on Peru’s endangered list. The bats reside in several locations in and around Cerro Verde. In addition, the site was recognized for education efforts in sponsoring a 2013 international conference to increase local understanding of bat habitat conservation.

  • Safford, Bisbee and Tohono received certification for their wildlife programs. Safford received Corporate Lands for Learning certification for its Burrowing Owl Habitat project. Bisbee and Tohono received Wildlife at Work program certification for their biodiversity and habitat conservation programs.
