The General Motors Foundation Awards $75,000 to Local Non-Profits
Grants are part of the General Motors Foundation’s commitment of more than $1 million to organizations in cities where GM has its plants
(3BL Media) Warren, MI - August 15, 2012 - The General Motors Foundation will provide $75,000 to support organizations within the Warren community that provide services and benefits for local families.
“The communities that our employees and their families call home are important to the General Motors Foundation,” said Vivian Pickard, President, GM Foundation. “The grants that we provide benefit education, community centers, cultural organizations and many other important areas of focus that strengthen and improve these communities.”
The GM Foundation grant will directly support the following local organizations and their goals:
- Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit: Provide professionally supported one-on-one mentorships.
- Clinton River Watershed Council: Continue to activate the Stream Leaders Program and connect students with mentors to use real world science working in a living laboratory.
- Family Youth Interventions: Provide food and shelter for youth and offer counseling support
- Judson Center: Provides autism, child welfare, disability and mental health support for those in need.
- Macomb Science Olympiad: The donation will help pay for supplies for their event supervisors, printing costs for rule books, and tournament programs.
- Warren Lions Club: Administer vision and hearing screenings along with providing glasses and hearing aids for those in need.
- Warren Symphony Orchestra: Support cultural and educational enrichment for the people of southeast Michigan.
- Winning Futures: Empower young people by developing essential life skills and fostering proactive mentoring programs structured with fun, hands-on activities.
The grants will make possible programs ranging from recreational and environmental initiatives to providing medical services to those in need. In addition, the grants also help procure educational supplies to students and culturally enrich people throughout the entire community. Specifically, the Foundation’s donation to Winning Futures, which works to empower students through life skills, will directly impact the hands-on mentoring classes that run on a weekly basis in schools across Southeast Michigan.

With mentors such as those at the Warren Transmission Plant, we are actively encouraging our youth to pursue careers that match their skills, interests and values. Through our mentors, we especially expose students to opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, four areas of vital importance to the success and growth of our nation as a whole.”
The General Motors Foundation grants made across the country are given to a wide-variety of organizations that families rely on to provide much needed services, improve education and impact the quality of life within their respective communities. The grants to these organizations and institutions will make these communities even greater places to work, live and grow.

In total, the GM Foundation will provide more than $1 million in funding to nearly 200 organizations in 42 cities where GM has plants and its employees live and work. Through these grants, the GM Foundation is building stronger communities and enriching the lives of its neighbors. The General Motors Foundation’s commitment continues as it works, in conjunction with employees, local leaders and community groups to continue to identify areas of need.
